Hello! I'm Aaron Jacklin, and this is Explaining Crime, an independent newsletter that helps you explain crime to your audience.
This is an experimental1 directory of crime research published in the last week by the academic journals that I monitor. This directory of new crime research2 is intended as a tool for journalists, advocates, and other researchers to find research local to them, but I hope it'll also be useful beyond that audience.
The currently supported regions3 reflect the audience of Explaining Crime as I understand it right now; be sure to let me know if you live outside the supported countries and I'll prioritize4 supporting your location next!
N.B.: This is a beta release.

The following studies don't appear to mention any of the terms my code searches for in titles or abstracts. No doubt some should have been categorized above. Studies with abstracts unavailable to my code-driven collection methods will often be categorized here because geographic information is more likely to appear in the abstract than the title.

Expect some categorization errors!
Studies were published in the last week and may appear in more than one place in the directory depending on which regions they reference. This may seem overly repetitive, especially in weeks with fewer studies, but this is meant as a feature instead of a bug. Say there’s a study that mentions both St. Louis and Missouri. If we only categorize it under St. Louis, someone outside St. Louis but looking for studies for Missouri in general may overlook it under St. Louis. (What if the title or abstract contains "St. Louis, Missouri"? Good question. That's why I do a manual read of each abstract, but I really want to find those instances with code soon.) Additionally, for readability, I omitted any countries, states, provinces, territories, or cities that I didn't match with any studies.
The currently supported countries are Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. “Supported” means not only are mentions of the country used to categorize studies, but also mentions of subcategories such as provinces in Canada and states in the United States and large cities in those subcategories.
I wrote and use simple code to help organize the studies and create this templated directory. Studies were categorized based on a mention in their title or abstract of the country, respective provinces, states, or territories, or large, currently supported cities. Future editions of this directory will get better as I improve the underlying code and provide support for other countries.
