Aaron Jacklin is performing an extraordinary service by compiling a regular list of academic journal articles bearing on the age-old issues of crime and punishment. As an old-time crime reporter with an unending curiosity about new crimes and international trends in misbehavior, The Art of Explaining Crime has pointed me toward new trends in the academic study of the subject. It turns out that Criminology and Sociology, although filled with insider jargon and outlooks, are probing into transnational crime, organized cartels and trafficking. These are the subjects that journalists and analysts can exploit to bring new insights to their audiences. Ghanaian and Nigerian "Yahoo Boys" working internet scams; "ghosting" and "bread-crumbing" in online relationships; the effect on Border Police of the international migration; the impact of illicit mineral mining on African economies and communities; these are all studies that suggest news stories or analytical attention from cops, reporters, intelligence ops and anybody else fascinated by the world of crime we live in. I find The Art of Explaining Crime to be the most helpful tip service on new crime available anywhere.
