Does high verbal intelligence help prevent future juvenile delinquency?
One of the studies in today's Crime Research Update tries to find out
Hello! I'm Aaron Jacklin, and this is The Art of Explaining Crime, an independent newsletter that helps you think and write about crime.
Use this tip sheet to help you integrate the latest research into your work. It's a directory of new crime research published by the academic journals that I monitor, including this study:
High Verbal Intelligence in Juvenile Delinquents: Protective or Risk Factor?
Journal: Youth Justice
Keywords: -
First author: Jessica L. Garcia [+6 other authors]
So, is high verbal intelligence protective or is it a risk factor for future delinquency? The short answer appears to be neither. Researchers found no relationship between high verbal intelligence and delinquency, suggesting that “verbal intelligence may not be a significant differentiator of future behavior for JIY [justice involved youth].” [No, a brief summary of findings doesn’t come with every listing, just this one.]

You’ll find today’s new research below, sorted by two broad categories: crime type and criminal justice/legal system stage. Research that doesn’t get sorted into those categories follows under “Unsorted Research.”
